Rainbow minis, a finished quilt, sort of

Once upon a time in a far-away land…well it was actually fall of 2011. And it was here. Ahem. There were some bare walls in the children’s bedroom. The brave and smart husband asked the talented and beautiful wife if she could make some quilts for decoration. The wife needed no further urging to make quilts…

Here is the story of a mini quilt I made and what happened next.

In fall of 2011 I bookmarked a pattern on the moda bake shop website I had liked (this of course was before I started making my own patterns). I didn’t think I wanted to make an entire quilt but this pattern would lend itself nicely to a mini.

I made this quilt:

When I was trying to decide how to quilt it, I thought I could make an inverse version.

So I made this quilt next to have a pair:

But for some reason lost in the passage of time I made some strange spacing decisions. It has bugged me and B. ever since.

This summer I had had enough of this terribly spaced quilt. The MQG had a sew day on Instagram and combined with the August appliqué mighty lucky challenge I set out to do a remake.

What does it mean when you still have the fabrics you used five years ago?

Success at last! A perfect matched set of mini quilts.

Original on the left, new companion piece on the right.

But wait…I made the originals during my “snow” phase, when I thought snow was whiter than white. I also didn’t have a Kona card to show me how wrong I was.

So now what? My remake doesn’t match! Quite a few swear words were said.

Time for version four:

Good thing I STILL have fabric left over.

I think I should rename this project the philospher’s quilt.

Ta-done! I had wanted to link up with the Needle and Thread network for this sort-of epic project but missed the window due to being trapped away from home at a mechanic’s. But loads of people link up mid-week with Lorna at Sew Fresh Quilts so I’ll be over there, hanging out. And with My Quilt Infatuation too…Friday will be here soon enough so I might as well get some lovin’ from linking up with Crazy Mom Quilts!

Oh and voting is on now for the Blogger’s Quilt Festival. My quilts are “Modern Hexies” in the modern category and “Get to Know Me” in the mini quilt category.

Even if you don’t vote for mine do please go look at all the other quilts. There’re some beauts this year.

Day 383

I started another project. Not quite oops because this is a quick turn around and there is a deadline and a purpose for it. But still…

I used to be part of an organization for which I still get the weekly email; last month I saw a call for entry and upon reading it I knew exactly what I would make for it, were I to make something for it. Fast forward through several weeks of not doing anything and I started it on Friday night.

Because my life is mostly kids, laundry, groceries, dishes, miscellany, etc, I plan most of my projects in my head (yes really, even doing block math and conversions to yardage and price thereof in my head). And I knew I had a piece of fabric that would not only suit this project but be perfect for it and also add a touch of wonderful. So I went to get that piece of fabric to use. Hmm, wasn’t there. Maybe this bin? Why would it be in this bin? Who cares, as long as it’s there. Oh. … Double check over here. Double check this other bin too. Damn. Where on earth could it have gone? I didn’t get rid of it did I? Surely not, because IT IS PERFECT FOR THIS PROJECT AND I NEED IT NOW. (Even thought I bought it for something else two years ago and never used it.) Can’t find it anywhere. Maybe I did get rid of it…now what? There is no other fabric that could be as wonderful as this one and I should abandon all of it and give up.

If you have a half metre piece of pinstriped indigo linen you bought from me at the guild garage sale last year can I have it back please?

2016 Blogger’s Quilt Festival – Modern Hexies

It’s been a slower than usual for quilt finishes this year but I have one I’m proud of and would like to share here. But first, welcome to my blog! It’s a new-ish blog and a modest one at that, but you’ll find that I work hard to quilt every day. This is where I record progress, triumphs, and sometimes failures.

I am entering my Modern Hexies in the Modern Quilt Category. It’s cunningly called “Modern Hexies.”

It was made for an exhibit of traditional blocks made modern for a display my guild did at another guild’s quilt show. I had a beautiful spectrum of greys leftover from a few previous quilts so I put those to good use.

Original blog post with loads of details is HERE.

The Blogger’s Quilt Festival will run September 19th through September 31st.  Check out AmysCreativeSide to view all the beautiful quilts linked up. There are lots of categories filled with inspiration!

My other entry for this year is “Get to Know Me” in the mini quilt category.

Here are links my quilt entries from last year, my first time ever joining in.
